About Amedzofe Sacred Cave

The Amedzofe Sacred Cave is described as an ancient cave formed from a cliff of Mount Gemi at Avatime Amedzofe, in the Ho West District of the Volta Region. It is one of two sacred sites in the area that were opened to tourism traffic, and it is presented as a cave, a cultural and heritage site, and a nature and hiking destination.

The site is closely associated with the local sacred forests. The Dark Forest and Sacred Forest are known locally as Egemese and Oneeme. Oneeme has a stone cliff measuring about 300 m high and 180 m wide, which serves as protection against sun and rain. In the 1980s the cliff was used as a landing site by the Ghana Armed Forces during cadet rappelling and scout camps.

Local accounts connect the sites to the Ashanti wars. Egemese is described as the forest where Ewedome forces crushed the Ashantis using boulders from the Gemi Mountain, led by Osawa Pekyi, warrior queen of Amedzofe. Oneeme is revered as the place where she hid the community during the Ashanti siege. Both sites are said to have remained sealed off until they were recently opened to tourism.

Amedzofe sits on the Togo Atakora mountain range at 685.8 m above sea level and is identified as Ghana's highest human settlement. The sacred sites Egemese and Oneeme lie on Mount Gemi and Egemitigo. A hike along Mount Gemi to the Dark Forest is reported to take about 35 minutes and to reveal scenery including Lake Volta.

Practical details are limited in the available sources. No verified cave entrance coordinates, opening hours, entry fees, guide arrangements, or safety information are recorded here, and the coordinates given for Amedzofe are for the settlement rather than the cave itself. Visitors should treat access arrangements as unconfirmed and seek current local information before travelling.
