Kpando Lake Mountain Zipline

Kpando Lake Mountain (KLM) Zipline is a recreation site on a mountain top above Kpando in the Volta Region, overlooking Lake Volta and its islands. GhanaDistricts, a public-private programme of the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development, describes it as the first zipline tourist attraction opened in Kpando. The site was previously a mountain resort with a panoramic view over the lake, and it officially opened on 29 November 2024. The Volta Regional Directorate of the Ghana Tourism Authority visited and offered advice; General Manager Philipa Yayra has said visitor safety remained a priority.

The proprietor, Dr. Alfred Osafo-Kwaako, describes KLM Zipline as a fundraising recreation centre: visitors take part in the activities and make a donation that supports eye-care programmes — cataract and glaucoma surgery and free glaucoma drugs — run by his Dr. Rose Mai hospitals in Ho and Kpando, mainly serving the Volta and Oti regions.

Activities described on camera in a Ghana Broadcasting Corporation report include a mountain hiking trail down into a valley marked with red marks, a mountain net about 80–100 ft high used to climb back to the top, a zipline, zip walking, and a short canopy walk on a wire with no planks, where success means touching the tree at the end. GhanaDistricts describes the zipline as 700 feet long, with clients flying about 30 to 40 feet above land level, and the canopy walk as a short 40-feet stretch on a wire. A coin-operated telescope on the mountain top is used for viewing Lake Volta and its islands, usable up to about 25 km in good weather.

Practical points reported by the proprietor: zipline weight limits are checked, and the telescope platform takes two to three people under about 250 kg. Staff are drawn from the two hospitals — nurses, optometrists and doctors — with about two workers on quiet days and up to 15 on busy days. Groups of about 100, including churches, schools, universities and companies, visit on holidays.

On access, the site operates on public holidays and some weekends, and is busiest on holidays such as 26 December to 2 January. A tourist visiting on a non-holiday day was required to give at least three days' notice. As of 24 March 2025, all services cost GH¢100 with a compulsory gate fee of GH¢50, and free treats were offered for Ghanaian children under 16. No fixed daily opening and closing times were stated.
