About Akosombo Dam
The Akosombo Dam, also known as the Akosombo Hydro Plant, is a rock-fill embankment dam across the Volta River at Akosombo in the Asuogyaman District of Ghana's Eastern Region. It is operated by the Volta River Authority (VRA), which lists the plant at 1,020MW installed capacity, with a main dam crest length of 660m, a saddle dam of 355m, and a height at axis from bedrock of 111m. Original construction ran from 1961 to 1965.
The dam impounds Lake Volta, which VRA describes as the largest man-made lake in the world by surface area, at 8,502 sq km, with a 7,250km shoreline and a length of 400km. The site sits in the Akosombo Gorge, where the Akwapim and Togo mountain ranges converge. VRA's brochure records the earlier name Nkonson-konson-bo, meaning "a chain of rock", for a settlement dating to 1733 at the foot of the gorge. The geologist Sir Albert Kitson identified the gorge as a future hydro-electric dam site in 1915, and Ghana's first President, Kwame Nkrumah, made the Volta River Project central to his development vision.
Akosombo itself is a planned township with a migrant population of about 15,000, according to VRA's brochure. The dam lies roughly 100km north-east of Accra, reached by first-class asphalt road via Tema. VRA states that thousands of visitors arrive each year to see Lake Volta, and that guided tours are conducted throughout the week. A third-party directory describes public viewing areas for photographs and panoramic views of the dam, the Volta River and the surrounding landscape.
Practical arrangements deserve checking before travelling. A secondary report from August 2025 indicates that visits to VRA generating stations resumed but are by pre-approved appointment only, requiring a formal request letter to the VRA Chief Executive sent at least 10 working days ahead; once approval is granted, VRA notifies visitors of protocols and fees charged per age and category. VRA publishes no fixed opening hours for the dam site on the pages reviewed, and third-party timings differ from that account. A VRA Visitor Centre in Akosombo Township is described by a third-party directory as the ticket point, holding displays and visitor information. VRA's brochure also records the MV Dodi Princess running four-hour lake cruises to Dodi Island on Sundays and public holidays with live band music.
