Why visit

About Jamestown Lighthouse

Jamestown Lighthouse is a cylindrical stone-and-concrete tower in the Jamestown district of Accra, in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana. It stands about 28 m tall, painted in red and white horizontal bands, with a lantern and gallery at the top and an adjoining keeper's and maintenance residence. The original lighthouse was erected in 1871 by the British; the present tower was built in 1932 to replace it, keeping the original site and orientation.

The light sits at a focal height of roughly 35 m above sea level and has a range of about 10 nautical miles, with the characteristic Fl W 10s. The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority operates it. The lantern was originally powered by a manually ignited diesel generator and was later replaced by solar panels.

For visitors, the tower is now a cultural monument and tourist attraction. The main draw is the climb to the summit, which opens views over the fishing harbour, Jamestown and the Gulf of Guinea. Reaching the top involves 112 steps: 82 up a spiral metal staircase, followed by a wooden section that is descended by manoeuvring backwards. Because of this, the tower interior is not step-free and is not wheelchair accessible.
