Why visit
About Adomi Bridge
The Adomi Bridge, originally named the Volta Bridge, is a latticed steel arch suspension bridge over the Volta River at Atimpoku in the Asuogyaman District of Ghana's Eastern Region. It is the first permanent bridge to span the Volta River and the country's longest suspension bridge, carrying National Route N2 just downstream of the Akosombo Dam and linking the Eastern and Volta regions.
Its two-hinged, silver latticed steel arch forms a distinctive crescent shape, with a two-lane road deck suspended by cables. The main span measures 245 m (805 ft), the total length 334 m (1,096 ft), and the deck width 11.9 m. Construction began in March 1955, and Kwame Nkrumah officially opened the bridge on 25 January 1957. It was designed by William Brown of Freeman Fox & Partners and built by Dorman Long, with steelwork fabricated by Cleveland Bridge & Engineering Company, at a cost of 682 thousand British pounds. The crescent arch has appeared on Ghanaian stamps and currency.
The bridge deck was fully replaced during a rehabilitation carried out in 2014–2015, and the crossing reopened to traffic in December 2015. In April 2019, following consensus between the Asuogyaman District, the Ghana Highway Authority and the Ghana Tourism Development Company, the bridge was classified as a tourist site.
For visitors, the bridge functions as a landmark monument and photo stop. Sources describe nearby viewpoints with panoramas of the Volta River, fishing canoes and forested hills, and list the location under landmarks, photography spots and scenic viewpoints. It sits roughly 87 km northeast of Accra and 75 km north of Tema.
The bridge remains an active road crossing, so viewpoints should be used safely and traffic should not be blocked. No other on-site facilities — such as toilets, parking or a visitor centre — were confirmed in the sources consulted, and no opening hours or fees are documented here.
