Explore Ghana
The Western Region rewards travellers who look outwards. Three viewpoints here share a taste for height and horizon, and each pairs a wide view with a story: Cape Three Points Lighthouse at Akwidaa marks Ghana's southernmost tip, where a fishing village and peninsula in Ahanta West hold both an 1875 lighthouse ruin and a working 1925 tower. Fort Dorothea, also at Akwidaa, is a ruined Brandenburg-era fort on a rocky hill, reached on foot with permission from the local chief. In Takoradi, Harbour View Gardens is an elevated garden, bar and restaurant in the Harbour Area, overlooking Takoradi Port and marked by a war memorial at its entrance.
They differ in mood and in effort. The lighthouse and the fort are coastal heritage sites, bound up with community tourism and a walk through local land; Harbour View Gardens is a relaxed, family-friendly spot for a drink above the port. History, heritage and monument experiences run through all three, so you can build a trip that moves from ruins and ocean air to a garden table with a view.
Good to know
Plan the Akwidaa sites together, since Cape Three Points Lighthouse and Fort Dorothea sit in the same village, and allow time to walk rather than rush. Fort Dorothea is reached on foot with permission from the local chief, so ask locally before setting out and be ready to accept a no. Harbour View Gardens is in Takoradi's Harbour Area, a different stretch of coast, so treat it as its own outing rather than a stop between the other two. Check conditions before you go: paths, weather and access arrangements can change, and it is worth confirming current opening arrangements for the garden, bar and restaurant. Carry water, wear shoes suited to rocky ground, and take your time.
