Why visit
About Tengzug Shrine
Tengzug Shrine is the paramount shrine of the Talensi people, set among sacred shrines in the cliffs above the village of Tengzug in the Tongo Hills of the Talensi District, Upper East Region. The Tongo-Tengzuk Cultural Landscape lies in the small town of Tengzuk, also known as Tongo, roughly 15 km southeast of Bolgatanga. It consists of balancing rock formations and Talensi ancestral shrines at and near the base of a horseshoe-shaped chain of hills.
The hills are the sacred epicentre of the Talensi, and the shrine is one of several here; Tona'ab, Bona'ab and Nyoo are the three prominent ones. Archaeological surveys indicate human use of the caves and shrines dating back to 500 BC. Between the 1880s and 1890s the hills served as a refuge from slave raiders and later as a focal point of resistance to British colonial rule until 1911. The site is a proposed UNESCO World Heritage site and received an Upper East Regional GTA Visitor Attraction of the Year Award in 2005 and an Exemplary Traditional Cultural Preservation award in 2001.
A guided tour of the landscape typically includes a model home, the hills and caves, the Chief's house and the shrine. Visitors are led to the Cave School, the Tengzug Chief's Palace with its interconnected mud houses and narrow passages, and the Donkey, Hyena and hiding caves. The shrine itself is reached by climbing boulders in the hills; no step-free or wheelchair access is described. Both men and women may enter the shrine, but must do so without clothing on the upper body. The shrines host Talensi ritual festivals, including Bo'araam, an October harvest thanksgiving, and Golib/Gologo in March and April at the Nyoo Earth Shrine.
Visitor facilities here are limited. The Upper East Regional Director of the Ghana Tourism Authority has said the site needs a receptive facility to keep its history and host visitors, and a clear pathway through the rocks to make walking easier. A tour guide has also raised the lack of tourist receptive facilities in the area. Opening hours, fees and booking arrangements are not established by the sources consulted, so these should be confirmed locally before travelling.
