Explore Ghana
The Eastern Region is where Ghana opens out beneath you. These seven viewpoints share one thing: each rewards the climb, the drive or the walk with a wide, unhurried look at water, forest or ridge. The Volta River threads through several of them, from the steel crescent of the Adomi Bridge at Atimpoku to the Akosombo Dam at Akosombo, which holds back Lake Volta, and the VRA Akosombo Dam Visitor Centre nearby, the place to start if you want to understand what you are looking at.
Others are quieter and greener. Boti Falls at Opersika is a seasonal twin waterfall in the Huhunya forest, and Umbrella Rock, close by, is a balancing formation reached mainly on a guided forest hike. Above Aburi, the Akuapem Ridge gives panoramic views towards Greater Accra and noticeably cooler air. Farther north at Atibie, Odweanoma Mountain is Ghana's main paragliding take-off point, looking over Nkawkaw and hosting the annual Easter paragliding festival.
They differ in effort and mood: some are roadside stops, others need a hike, a guide or a good head for heights.
Good to know
Plan around the weather and the season. Boti Falls is seasonal, so check the water before travelling, and forest hikes to Umbrella Rock are usually done with a local guide. Paragliding at Odweanoma depends on conditions and the festival calendar, so confirm before you go. The Akosombo Dam and its visitor centre are run by the Volta River Authority, so check access and any boat trips in advance. Roads link Atimpoku, Akosombo, Aburi, Koforidua and Nkawkaw, but allow generous time between stops and start early to make the most of the light.
