About Tsatsadu Falls

Tsatsadu Falls, also written Tsatsadu Waterfall, is a waterfall on the Tsatsadu River at Alavanyo Abehenease in the Hohoe Municipality of the Volta Region. It sits in the same part of the region as the better-known falls near Hohoe, and tourism listings place it roughly 10 km from Hohoe town, among wooded and hilly country.

What sets Tsatsadu apart is that the fall is also a working power site. It is the location of the Tsatsadu Generating Station, described by the Bui Power Authority as Ghana's first grid-connected micro-hydropower plant. The station is a run-of-river facility: rather than damming the river, it diverts part of the Tsatsadu River's flow through a spillway, weir and diversion channel to a powerhouse at the foot of the hill. Part of the fall feeds the plant, while the waterfall itself continues to flow.

The plant was developed by the Bui Power Authority under the Ministry of Energy's renewable energy initiative. Construction began in 2005, and the station was commissioned in 2019/2020 with a capacity of 45 kW. A second phase, commissioned on 20 October 2024, raised output to 120 kW; the Bui Power Authority's own site now states a total installed capacity of 145 kW. A Tsatsadu Centre of Excellence was also built at Alavanyo-Abehenease as corporate social responsibility by the authority.

The site has been promoted as a tourism asset. The Volta Regional Coordinating Council led a field trip there during the 5th Volta Trade and Investment Fair, and visitors on that occasion were guided around the facility by Bui Power Authority staff, including a water collection point and a recreational section of the fall.
