Explore Ghana
Boat trips in the Eastern Region almost all begin with the same stretch of water: the Volta River, held back at Akosombo by the Akosombo Dam and spreading out as Lake Volta. From here you can cruise to Dodi Island on a roughly two-hour boat trip, join the Dodi World Cruise aboard the three-deck MV Dodi Princess II with its live band music and water sports, or simply take to the river from a resort jetty. The VRA Akosombo Dam Visitor Centre is a good first stop for understanding the dam and the lake it created.
What these places share is water, and the easy, unhurried pace that comes with it. Where they differ is in mood. The Royal Senchi Hotel and Resort, Afrikiko Riverfront Resort, BridgeView Resort and Sajuna Beach Club each offer their own stretch of riverbank, with chalets, pools, private beach, dining and boat cruises. Inland, Boti Falls is a seasonal twin waterfall in the forest of Huhunya, about 17 km northeast of Koforidua. At Senchi, the historic ferry crossing recalls the days before the Adomi Bridge opened in 1957.
Good to know
Most boat trips here start from Akosombo, so plan your day around the water rather than trying to fit too much in. Cruises to Dodi Island take roughly two hours each way, so allow a full day. Boti Falls is seasonal, so check the water is flowing before you travel out to Opersika. Ask your resort or the VRA Akosombo Dam Visitor Centre about sailing times, and book ahead at weekends and holidays. Bring sun protection, water and a light rain layer, and confirm whether life jackets are provided. Roads link Akosombo, Senchi and Atimpoku, but allow extra time for the drive to Koforidua and Huhunya.
