The Eastern Region is where the Volta River slows and widens, and the resorts here all share that same setting: water, green hills and the Adomi Bridge close by. Adi Lake Resort sits on the lakeside at Atimpoku, near the bridge and Akosombo Road, while Platinum Blue Island Resort is a three-star riverside retreat in Atimpoku in the Asuogyaman District, also close to the Adome (Adomi) Bridge.

Around Akosombo the choice widens. The Royal Senchi Hotel and Resort is a four-star riverside property on Senchi Ferry Road with 84 rooms and suites, sports and wellness facilities and Volta River boat cruises. Afrikiko Riverfront Resort offers chalets and rooms, a pool, dining and boat cruises, and BridgeView Resort spreads across a mountain property and a waterfront LakeSide property near the bridge. Sajuna Beach Club, between Senchi and Atimpoku, adds a private beach, swimming and barbecue.

What differs is the mood rather than the river. Some are large and full of facilities, others are small and quiet; some sit up in the Akosombo mountains, others right at the water's edge.

Before you go

Most of these resorts cluster around Akosombo and Atimpoku, so pick one base and travel between the others by road along the Akosombo Road and Senchi Ferry Road. Boat cruises, hiking trails, pools and beaches are not offered everywhere, so check what each resort actually has before you book, especially if you are travelling with children. Ask about river cruises and lake or island access when you reserve, and confirm whether your chosen property is the mountain or the waterfront one where a resort has two sites. Weekends and holidays fill quickly, so book ahead and confirm your room type directly with the resort.
