Waterfalls in Eastern Region

The Eastern Region is waterfall country. Tucked into the forested hills and ridges that rise behind Accra, these six falls share a great deal: each sits in rainforest or hill country, each is reached on foot, and each rewards the walk with cool water, green shade and birdsong. Most are seasonal, so the water you see depends on the rains.

They differ in character and in the effort they ask of you. Boti Falls, a seasonal twin waterfall in the forest of Huhunya near Opersika, is the best known, with a viewpoint, a hiking trail, community tourism and a boat experience. Akaa Falls, also seasonal, lies near Akyeremanteng, about 21 km northeast of Koforidua and 7 km from Boti Falls, so the two pair naturally. Adom Waterfalls at Obosomase is a forest fall reached by a steep stone-step trail, while Asenema Waterfalls in the Akuapem Hills above Adukrom is a seasonal rainforest fall a short marked walk from the main road. Further north, Asubone Waterfall at Atibie cascades over rocky formations, and near Aburi, Oboadaka Falls drops roughly 20 m and is used for swimming and picnics.

Good to know

Before you go

Plan around the rains: several of these falls are seasonal, so ask locally or check ahead before travelling, and expect less water in the dry months. Base yourself in Koforidua for Boti Falls and Akaa Falls, and in the Akuapem Hills or Aburi for Adom Waterfalls, Asenema Waterfalls and Oboadaka Falls. Roads link the main towns, but the last stretch to each fall is usually a walk, sometimes steep or slippery, so wear shoes with grip and carry water. Distances between falls can be long, so group nearby ones into a single day rather than rushing. Before setting out, confirm access, trail conditions and whether a guide or community fee applies, and take your litter away with you.
