Heritage sites in Eastern Region

The Eastern Region holds some of Ghana's most quietly remarkable heritage, and this collection of eight places shows how varied it is. Some are living seats of traditional authority, such as Awansa Palace at Akyem Old Tafo and Yiadom-Hwedie Palace in Koforidua, both working palaces rather than ticketed museums. Others are preserved for visitors, like the Okyeman Old Palace Museum in Kibi, which reflects the royal heritage of the Akyem Abuakwa State.

Spiritual life runs through the list too. The Akonedi Shrine at Larteh Kubeasi in the Akuapem Hills is dedicated chiefly to the female spirit Akonedi, while the Ohum Shrine and Ohum Dua in Old Tafo are central to the Ohum Festival of the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Area. History of another kind waits at Senchi Ferry Crossing, once the main vehicular link to Old Akrade before the Adomi Bridge opened in 1957, and at Tetteh Quarshie Cocoa Farm in Mampong-Akuapem, Ghana's founding cocoa farm. Jackson Park in central Koforidua, redeveloped from 2021, adds civic and community life to the mix.

Good to know

Before you go

These places are spread across the region, so group them by area rather than trying to see everything in one day. Koforidua gives you Jackson Park and Yiadom-Hwedie Palace, while Kibi, Old Tafo and New Tafo sit in Akyem country, and Larteh, Mampong and Senchi lie towards the Akuapem Hills and the Volta River. Several sites are working palaces or active shrines, so check ahead before travelling and ask permission before entering or photographing. Dress respectfully, and remember that ceremonies and festivals may affect access.
