Mountains and hills in Eastern Region

The Eastern Region holds some of Ghana's most rewarding high ground, and this page brings together three very different ways to enjoy it. All three sit on hills or ridges, all offer cooler air and wide views, and all are within reach of Accra for a short break. Beyond that, they could hardly be more different.

The Aburi Mountain, also called the Akuapem Ridge, rises 350 to 500 metres above the town of Aburi. It is the gentle option: panoramic viewpoints over Greater Accra, noticeably cooler weather and hiking routes for those who want to walk. Further inland at Atibie-Kwahu, the Odweanoma Mountain Paragliding Site is Ghana's main paragliding take-off point, looking out over Nkawkaw and hosting the annual Easter paragliding festival. Between the two, in Akosombo, 3A's Guest House offers an air-conditioned base on Church Ridge Avenue in the Asukwao area, with a pool, a restaurant and a shared kitchen, and it welcomes families.

So you might hike the ridge at Aburi, watch the paragliders launch at Odweanoma, and sleep comfortably at Akosombo in between.

Before you go

Plan around the weather rather than a fixed itinerary: the ridge at Aburi is cooler than the coast, and paragliding at Odweanoma depends on conditions, so check before you travel. The Easter festival at Atibie-Kwahu draws crowds, so book accommodation early if your visit coincides with it. Distances between Aburi, Akosombo and Atibie-Kwahu are not short, so allow a full day for each and consider an overnight stay rather than rushing back. 3A's Guest House in Akosombo makes a convenient family-friendly base with a pool and restaurant.
