Rivers in Eastern Region

The Eastern Region's riverside places all gather around one great waterway, the Volta, and the stretch between Senchi, Atimpoku and Akosombo is where its story is easiest to read. Here you can stand on the Adomi Bridge, Ghana's first permanent Volta River crossing and its longest suspension bridge, a steel crescent arch carrying National Route N2 at Atimpoku. A short way upstream at Akosombo, the Akosombo Dam, a rock-fill embankment dam operated by the Volta River Authority, holds back Lake Volta.

What these places share is the river itself, and most of them offer a boat experience of some kind. How they differ is in mood. The dam and the bridge are monuments to engineering and history, while Senchi Ferry Crossing recalls the days when ferries were the main vehicular link to Old Akrade before the Adomi Bridge opened in 1957. The rest are places to stay and unwind: The Royal Senchi Hotel and Resort with its 84 rooms and suites, Afrikiko Riverfront Resort with its chalets and hiking trail, Platinum Blue Island Resort near the bridge, and Sajuna Beach Club with its private beach between Senchi and Atimpoku.

Good to know

Before you go

Base yourself at Akosombo or Atimpoku and you can reach most of these places without long journeys, since the bridge, the dam, the resorts and the ferry crossing all sit close to the same stretch of the Volta. The N2 through Atimpoku is the main road link, so road travel is the practical way to move between them. Boat cruises are offered at several of the resorts and at the dam, but river conditions and schedules vary, so confirm with each place before you set out. Check current access arrangements for the dam and bridge area, and book accommodation ahead if you are travelling at busy times.
