Explore Ghana
The Eastern Region is where Ghana's biggest stretch of water begins. The Akosombo Dam, a rock-fill embankment on the Volta River operated by the Volta River Authority, holds back Lake Volta, and almost everything on this page sits on or beside that water. Come for wide lake views, a boat ride, a walk in the hills and a slower pace than the coast.
The places here share a shoreline but not a mood. The Akosombo Dam and the VRA Akosombo Dam Visitor Centre are about engineering, history and viewpoints. Dodi Island is an inhabited island in Lake Volta, reached by a cruise boat trip of roughly two hours from Akosombo, and Dodi World Cruise sails there aboard the three-deck MV Dodi Princess II with live band music and water sports. BridgeView Resort spreads between a mountain property and a waterfront LakeSide property near the Adomi Bridge, while Platinum Blue Island Resort sits riverside at Atimpoku, near the Adome (Adomi) Bridge on the Volta River.
So you can pair a dam visit with a cruise, or base yourself at a resort and take the water as it comes. Families, hikers and curious first-time visitors will all find something here.
Good to know
Akosombo and Atimpoku are the two hubs, and the Adomi Bridge links them, so plan your days around that crossing. Cruises to Dodi Island take roughly two hours each way, so give a boat trip most of a day rather than squeezing it in. Check sailing days and times with Dodi World before you travel, and confirm visitor centre opening times with the VRA before setting out. If you want to stay lakeside, book BridgeView Resort or Platinum Blue Island Resort ahead, especially at weekends. Bring sun protection, water and a light rain layer, and ask locally about current conditions on the water.
