About Keta Lagoon Islands

The Keta Lagoon Islands are the small, undeveloped sand islands scattered through Keta Lagoon — also called the Anlo-Keta lagoon — in the Keta Municipal District of the Volta Region, southeastern Ghana. The lagoon is the largest in Ghana and the largest of more than 90 lagoons along the country's coastline. It sits behind a narrow sandbar that separates it from the Gulf of Guinea, and together with surrounding flood plains and mangrove swamps it forms the Keta Lagoon Complex Ramsar Site, a coastal wetland of roughly 300 km² of lagoon within a management area of about 1,200 km². The Ramsar Sites Information Service lists the site centre as approximately 05°56'21"N 00°50'E.

For a visitor, the islands are chiefly a birdwatching and nature destination. The lagoon complex has historically been known as the most important seashore bird site in Ghana, and birdwatching is among the services recognised by the Ghana Wildlife Society and the Ghana Tourism Authority. Recorded waterbirds include squacco heron, black-winged stilt, curlew, Caspian tern, wood sandpiper and western reef heron, alongside migratory waterfowl. The main waterbird areas of the lagoon are associated with the Afiadenyigba, Fiahor, Woe, Tegbi and Adina communities. The islands themselves are described as bird breeding spots and as a good place to view them. Conservation objectives for the Ramsar site include protecting migratory birds, mangrove forest and sea turtle breeding grounds.

Expect a simple, self-reliant outing. The islands have no facilities: no food or water sources, no shops, ATMs or medical services, and no on-island transport or accommodation. Bring everything you need from Keta town, which serves as the base with basic accommodation, local eateries, ATMs and medical care. Mobile signal is patchy or absent on smaller islands, and WiFi is generally unavailable outside major towns.

Access is by small boat or motorised canoe arranged locally from Keta town, departing from the lagoon edge; there are no official ferries. Sources note that boat rides can be rough and that currents near the sand islands can be tricky, so visitors should confirm life jackets with operators. No accessibility provisions for visitors with disabilities are documented. The lagoon faces pressures from pollution, illegal fishing, land encroachment and climate change.
