About Keta Lagoon Complex Ramsar Site

Keta Lagoon Complex Ramsar Site is a wetland protected area in the Keta area of the Volta Region, Ghana, recognised as a Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention. It was designated on 14 August 1992 and carries site number 567. Ghana's Forestry Commission describes the complex as being managed under multiple-use management with significant local participation, and gives a management area of 1,200 km² with a lagoon area of 300 km². The Keta Lagoon itself, with brackish water, is described by the Commission as the largest lagoon in Ghana.

The site's stated conservation objectives include protecting thousands of migratory birds, mangrove forest and sea turtle breeding grounds. The Forestry Commission also notes that the complex has tourism potential, and describes its tiny islands as sites of special attraction for ornithologists, bird watchers and tourists generally. Bird watching is listed among the activities associated with the site.

For a visitor, the appeal is therefore a broad coastal wetland landscape rather than a single built attraction. Travel writing on the area presents it as a place for birdlife, lagoon views and Keta itineraries, best suited to nature lovers and birdwatchers, and as a haven for birdlife, fishing and sunsets. The Ramsar listing places the site centroid at approximately 05°56'21"N 00°50'E, in the Keta Municipal area of the Volta Region; secondary listings also associate the complex with Anloga and Woe, indicating it spans the wider Keta and Anloga lagoon area.

Practical expectations should be modest. The Forestry Commission states the site is "yet to be developed to receive tourists", so there is no confirmed formal visitor infrastructure, entrance, fee or opening hours on the available evidence. Guidance for the area suggests planning a specific viewpoint, guide or community stop rather than expecting one formal entrance, and notes that weather, road conditions and tide or water levels may affect the experience. Visitors should treat access arrangements as something to confirm locally in advance.
