About Anyanui Market

Anyanui Market is a traditional weekly market held on Wednesdays at Anyanui, a village on a Volta River distributary in the Anloga Municipal area of Ghana's Volta Region. It sits on the estuary side of the river, opposite Ada Foah, and Keta Tourism lists it among the district's visitor sites, presenting it as a place to experience what it calls "the real Ghana".

Market day is the reason to plan a visit. Traders sell live chickens, local salt, locally caught fish and Keta shallots, alongside colourful fabrics. Ada Tourism Stakeholders Association describes the Wednesday market as small but less chaotic than the market at Kasseh, and suggests combining a market visit with a ferry tour. Volta Estuary Tourism, by contrast, calls it one of the biggest markets in the area and lists local crafts, clothing, fruit, vegetables and fresh fish among what is sold — a difference in characterisation worth noting rather than resolving.

Access is the main planning question. Keta Tourism recommends arriving on the early-morning ferry from Ada Foah on Wednesdays, which stops at island villages en route to pick up market sellers. Ada Tourism Stakeholders Association gives the ferry leaving Ada Foah at 8am and returning around 3pm, depending on when the ferry is full; a community petition describes sailings to Anyanui at 8am and 3pm with returns around 1pm and 6pm. Volta Estuary Tourism describes the ferry from the Ghana Highway Marine Yard as erratic. Business & Financial Times reported in April 2026 that the Ada Foah–Anyanui crossing is about 7 km by outboard motor, roughly 45 minutes each way, past mangrove and sandy river banks, and that the pontoon that once carried market women and traders was grounded in the 1990s, leaving a road journey of nearly 75 km via Anloga, Sogakope and Kasseh.

No fixed opening or closing clock times for the market are published. The village also has an Anyanui Tourist Information Center offering bike rental, kayak hire, local guides, boat chartering and homestay booking.
