About Senchi Ferry Crossing

Senchi Ferry Crossing is the historic Volta River ferry crossing at Senchi, in the Asuogyaman District of Ghana's Eastern Region. Senchi sits on the west bank of the Volta River, downstream of the Akosombo Dam, and the ferry station carries traffic across the river from the west to Old Akrade on the eastern side. The crossing is a heritage site rather than a built attraction, and its interest lies in its role in the region's transport history.

For decades this was the major crossing for vehicular traffic over the Volta. That changed in January 1957, when the Adomi Bridge — originally the Volta Bridge — was completed, and the ferry's central role in the road link between the Eastern and Volta regions ended.

The crossing returned to service in a significant way in 2014. When the Adomi Bridge was closed for repairs, the Ghana Highway Authority launched ferry services at Senchi and Akrade, two communities on opposite banks of the river. Two ferries, named "Senchi" and "Akrade", carried vehicles and passengers as the alternative link between the two regions. Contemporary reporting described the crossing as a half-mile journey from Senchi to Akrade taking about six minutes, and noted that drivers paid between GH¢12 and GH¢85 to ferry vehicles at that time, compared with GH¢2–GH¢5 previously.

Today the area is noted for riverside views and transport-heritage interest. Senchi is also known for riverside resorts and guest houses south of the dam, including Royal Senchi Resort, which lie nearby rather than at the crossing itself.

Practical information is limited. No documented on-site visitor amenities — toilets, parking, food or guided tours — were found in the sources reviewed, and opening hours, entrance fees, contact details and accessibility are not documented. The coordinates recorded here are for the town of Senchi, not a confirmed ferry landing or visitor entrance, so the exact arrival point should be confirmed locally before travelling.
