About Dodi Island
Dodi Island is an island in Lake Volta, in the Asuogyaman District of Ghana's Eastern Region, sitting roughly 5 kilometres off the lake shore. It is reached by boat rather than road: the standard visitor route is a cruise from Akosombo, with the operator Dodi World describing the voyage as about two hours and the island as some 14.6 nautical miles from Akosombo. The island is small — recorded at about 0.625 square kilometres — and part of it is inhabited, with a population figure of 600 given in one source and about 300 in another.
The island's visitor identity is closely tied to Lake Volta's creation in 1961, after which it became a tourist site. It was the landing place of the cruise boat Dodi Princess, which ran lake cruises from 1991 until it was destroyed by fire in 2013. In 2011 the Volta River Authority allocated US$2.5 million to develop the island's eco-tourism potential through Volta Hotels Limited. The current operator, Dodi World, runs the 150-capacity MV Dodi Princess II to the island.
On the island, the Volta River Authority has created a park that includes an ostrich park, a bushbuck park and two large birdcages. Arriving visitors are welcomed by island inhabitants with cultural music and traditional dances. Water-based activities listed by the operator include speed boats, pedal boats, skiing, kayaks and water bicycles, along with camping. On board the cruise, the operator lists a restaurant, a bar on the middle deck, a live band on the upper deck, and lunch, beverage and water included in the package.
Cruises are scheduled for weekends — every Saturday and Sunday — with departures at 9:00 am and 3:00 pm and expected arrivals at 2:00 pm and 8:00 pm. Weekdays are used for corporate retreats, conferences, parties, group excursions and charters, with night cruises on the last Friday of each month and services on all holidays. The operator's revised rate card, effective 29 May 2026, quotes GH₵600 for adults, GH₵400 for children aged 4–12, and free entry for children under three, as an all-inclusive cruise package rather than a standalone island gate fee. Departure is from Dodi World at Akosombo, about two hours' drive from Accra via Tema, Shai Hills and the Akosombo Road.
