Waterfalls in Ghana

Ghana's waterfalls are one of the country's quiet pleasures: forest cascades, twin falls and multi-tiered drops scattered from the Eastern Region to the Volta hills, the Ashanti heartland, Bono East and Oti. Many sit close to villages where a local guide will walk with you, so a visit is often as much about the community as the water. Boti Falls, the seasonal twin waterfall in the forest of Huhunya, is the best known, and Wli Waterfalls in the Agumatsa Wildlife Sanctuary draws travellers for its two cascades and easy trail to the lower falls. Others reward a little more effort: Tagbo Falls at Liati Wote, Ote Falls above the mountain town of Amedzofe, and Shiare Waterfalls near the Hanging Village in the Breast Mountains.

They differ in character and in how you reach them. Some are seasonal and run strongest in the rains, such as Akaa Falls near Koforidua, Asenema Waterfalls in the Akuapem Hills and Tsenku Waterfall in the Dodowa Forest. Others, like Anyinasu Waterfall in Ashanti and Bowiri Abohire Waterfall in Oti, are described as year-round. Access varies too: Adom Waterfalls at Obosomase is climbed by steep stone steps, Akpom Waterfall at Logba Tota pairs with a limestone cave, and Kintampo and Fuller Falls sit near Kintampo in Bono East.

Good to know

Before you go

Plan around the rains if you want volume, since several falls here are seasonal, and ask locally before setting out. Many are reached on foot, from a short marked walk to treks of 30 to 60 minutes, so wear shoes with grip and carry water. A guide is usual and often required, particularly at Biakpa, Shiare and the Volta Region falls. Distances between regions are long, so group falls by area rather than trying to link them all: the Eastern Region cluster around Koforidua, the Volta and Oti falls, and the Kintampo pair in Bono East. Check current access, trail conditions and any entry arrangements before you travel, as these can change.
