Oti Region rewards travellers who are happy to walk for their reward. The waterfalls gathered here share a great deal: most sit in forest or at the edge of hills, most are reached on foot rather than by car alone, and nearly all are looked after with the communities who live beside them. Shiare Waterfalls, near the Hanging Village in the Breast Mountains, asks for a steep thirty to forty minute trek. Kyakyale Waterfalls, also near Shiare, hides in forest in Nkwanta South. In Kyabobo National Park near Nkwanta, Laboum Waterfall drops in tiers along the Laboum River, with Kyabobo Lower Waterfalls generally identified as its lower cascade.

They differ in character and in effort. Bowiri Abohire Waterfall in Biakoye District is perennial and reached by road via Kwamekrom, then about a twenty-five minute forest path, while Bowiri Aboabo Water Cascades nearby are gentler cascades. At Kute village near Jasikan there are two tiers, Kute Upper Falls and Kute Lower Falls, both approached on forest walks. Wadjakli Waterfalls at Likpe-Todome in Guan District are only about a ten-minute walk from the community, and make a natural stop after the Likpe Ancestral Caves hike.

Good to know

Before you go

Plan around the walking, not the driving. Several of these falls, including Shiare, Kyakyale, Laboum and the Kute tiers, are reached only or mainly on foot, so allow more time than the map suggests and wear shoes with grip. Ask locally before setting out: paths, water levels and access can change with the season, and some sites are community-run, so it is worth checking who to speak to and whether a guide is expected. Distances between districts are real, so group places by area rather than trying to see them all in a day. Carry water, rain protection and cash, and take your litter home.
