About Tetteh Quarshie Cocoa Farm

Tetteh Quarshie Cocoa Farm, also known as the Ecomuseum of Cocoa, is the founding cocoa farm in Ghana. It stands at Mampong-Akuapem in the Eastern Region, in Akwapim North Municipal, and is managed by the Cocoa Research Institute of Ghana (CRIG). The farm is about one acre (0.38 hectares) in size and is also described as a cocoa research site.

The site's significance rests on Tetteh Quarshie (1842–1892), who brought cocoa seeds from Bioko (Fernando Po), in present-day Equatorial Guinea, and established the farm in 1879. Three trees said to have been planted by him are reported to remain on the farm. The farm was declared a national monument in 1986.

Visitors can reasonably expect a heritage site rather than a large commercial attraction. Reported features include the historic cocoa museum, a monument commemorating Tetteh Quarshie, a farmhouse containing his living quarters, and the original cocoa trees. Guided tours are described, with guides characterised as welcoming and knowledgeable.

In November 2020 the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture commissioned the first phase of a refurbished Receptive Facility and Exhibition Centre, funded through the Tourism Development Fund in partnership with the Ghana Tourism Authority. According to the Ghana News Agency, the facility includes a souvenir shop, a photo exhibition hall, a video room, a manager's office and washrooms, with an audio-visual room for orientation films on cocoa and exhibition spaces for thematic presentations.

The farm lies roughly 55–58 km north of Accra, reached via the Accra–Aburi–Mampong road. Opening hours, entrance fees, guided-tour arrangements and precise coordinates are not established by the available sources, so visitors should confirm these directly before travelling.
