About Ohum Shrine and Ohum Dua (Gyempremo Shrine), Old Tafo
The Ohum Shrine and the Ohum Dua, also known as the Gyempremo Shrine, stand in Old Tafo (Akyem Old Tafo) in the Abuakwa North Municipality of Ghana's Eastern Region. Old Tafo is described as the oldest town in the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Area, and the site is bound up with that town's identity: it houses the Ohum dua, described as an over 500-year-old spiritual tree that does not wither, and the Ohum shrine where the deity Agyempremu Kofi is said to reside.
This is a sacred, spiritually significant place rather than a conventional visitor attraction. The deity Agyempremu Kofi is regarded as protector of the people of Tafo, who are described as custodians of Ohum. Old Tafo is also the home of the Ohum Festival, described as the only festival widely celebrated by the people of Akyem Abuakwa. The festival is a two-day observance marking the first yam harvest and asking for blessings in the coming year; it also marks the anniversary of the Akyem nation, and is celebrated in June and July.
The festival's highlight, as reported by the Ghanaian Times, is a journey led by traditional leaders to the Gyempremo Shrine at Old Tafo to perform rituals and sacrifices honouring their deity. Offerings of food, drinks and symbolic items are presented, and a priest or spiritual leader invokes the gods through prayers, chants and sometimes drumming. A legend associated with the shrine holds that anyone who trips and falls on the return journey from the shrine will not live to see the next year.
For a visitor, the site is best understood as a living place of worship and tradition rather than a managed attraction. No visitor facilities, guided tours, opening hours, fees or public access arrangements were found in the sources reviewed, so anyone hoping to visit should treat access as unknown and approach with the caution and respect such a place requires. The coordinates commonly published for Old Tafo (6.233, -0.400) locate the town, not a verified entrance to the shrine.
