About Akonedi Shrine, Larteh
The Akonedi (also written Akonnedi) Shrine is a traditional shrine and cultural heritage site at Larteh Kubeasi, in the Akuapem Hills of Ghana's Eastern Region. It is one of the shrines associated with the Akuapim people, and it is listed among the tourist sites of the Akuapem North District administration, alongside places such as Akaa Falls, Nsuta Falls, Obosabea Rock and Asenema Falls.
The shrine is dedicated to several deities, including Akonedi, Esi Ketewa, Adade Kofi, Asuo Gyebi and Tegare. Akonedi, a female spirit, is the most prominent of these and is especially associated with supporting people who are socially marginalized, particularly women. The shrine is also described as a place where moral claims are made and where the name of Akonedi is invoked in matters of social justice.
Traditional religious performances, herbal medicine and psychic healing are practised at the shrine, and it functions as a centre for worship, healing and conflict resolution. Its origins are traced to a woman named Nedi, daughter of Akon, whose body was found at an anthill that is now regarded as a sacred site. In its modern history, Okomfohemmaa Nana Akua Oparebea is among the most notable figures; she helped establish branches of the shrine in the United States. The shrine has continued to serve people in urban areas such as Accra and exists within a multireligious environment.
Larteh lies on the Akuapem Ridge roughly 56 kilometres north of Accra, within the Akuapem North Municipal District. The shrine's setting in the Akuapem Hills places it in a historic Akuapem town known for its cultural heritage.
Visitors should note that this is an active place of worship rather than a staged attraction, and that the available sources do not record opening hours, entry fees, guided-tour arrangements or visitor facilities.
