Why visit
About Beyin Beach
Beyin Beach is the sandy Atlantic shoreline at Beyin, a coastal village in the Jomoro Municipal District of Ghana's Western Region. Beyin is also the traditional capital of the Western Nzema Traditional Council, and the Kundum festival climaxes here. The beach sits beside Fort Apollonia, a 17th-century fort about 123km from Takoradi, and next to the Amansuri wetland, described as Ghana's largest intact swamp forest and the access point for the stilt village of Nzulezo.
The Jomoro Municipal authority describes roughly 50km of sandy beach running from Ekabaku to Newtown, Ghana's last coastal community on its western frontier. It characterises the stretch as clean white sand laced with rows of coconut trees, and regards it as among Ghana's most beautiful sandy beaches. The wider Jomoro coast is also noted for deserted sandy beaches.
The beach is a nesting habitat for marine turtles of global conservation interest. In season, roughly August to February, Green, Olive Ridley and Leatherback turtles nest on these beaches, and turtle night walks and hatchery releases are run locally. CNN Travel listed Beyin Beach 18th among its top 25 African beaches in a list released on 24 November 2012, describing it as "a classic African working beach" where visitors can expect to watch about 100 men pulling in enormous seine nets filled with fish.
What a visitor can reasonably expect, based on this evidence, is beach walking, swimming, watching seine-net fishing, and turtle night walks in season. Beyin is about a seven-hour drive from Accra or two and a half hours from Sekondi-Takoradi, and is reachable by trotro from Takoradi's Nzema station. Details such as entrance fees, opening hours, guided-tour prices, lifeguards and facilities are not established by the available evidence.
