Wildlife reserves in Western Region

Ghana's Western Region holds some of the country's most rewarding wild places, where forest, water and community life sit close together. Amansuri Wetland near Beyin is a blackwater system reached by canoe, and the journey leads to Nzulezo, a village built on stilts. The Beyin Visitor Centre is where those guided dugout-canoe trips to Nzulezo on Lake Tadane are arranged, so it is the natural first stop for anyone heading out on the water. Further inland, Nini-Suhien National Park protects 160 square kilometres of wet evergreen forest and, together with the Ankasa Resource Reserve, forms the roughly 500 square kilometre Ankasa Conservation Area.

What these places share is water, greenery and a strong sense of local involvement, with community tourism and boat experiences running through the wetland and visitor centre. They differ in mood and setting. Amansuri and Beyin are about slow canoe travel and village life on the lake, while Nini-Suhien, near Amokwawsuazo, is forest country with hiking trails for those who prefer to walk under a closed canopy.

Good to know

Before you go

Plan the wetland and the forest as separate outings, as they sit in different parts of the region. Start at the Beyin Visitor Centre to arrange your guided canoe tour to Nzulezo, and allow time for the boat trip itself. For Nini-Suhien National Park, expect wet evergreen forest and hiking trails, so bring sturdy footwear and rain protection. Before setting out, check current conditions and opening arrangements with the visitor centre or park staff, as access, water levels and guided-tour availability can change. Carry water, use a local guide, and take your litter home.
