About Anlo Beach

Anlo Beach is a small coastal fishing community in the Shama District of Ghana's Western Region, sitting at the south-eastern end of Shama between the Pra River and the sea. It is a working shoreline rather than a developed resort: the community lies within the Pra estuary, and the Shama District Assembly identifies the Pra Estuary and Anlo Beach wetland as an area of high landscape value.

The settlement is characterised in a 2010 CRC/Friends of the Nation report as a relatively small fishing community on mainly flat land, with no hills or elevations nearby and a curved sandy beach along the shore. Ewes, the ethnic minority in Shama, live at Anlo Beach, and most residents work in the fishing industry. The same report describes it as a migrant community that has suffered from overharvesting of mangroves and illegal fishing, and records no modern landing facilities in the Shama area's fishing villages.

Anlo Beach has borne the brunt of tidal waves for years. The Shama District Assembly reported that tidal waves destroyed about 64 houses and displaced 2,400 residents. MyJoyOnline reported on 7 April 2022 that over 400 residents were displaced and that over 90% of households had been swept into the sea; GhanaWeb reported that residents were to be resettled. These accounts differ in scale and should be read as separate reports rather than a single figure.

For a visitor, the beach is best understood as an artisanal fishing shoreline in an active, exposed coastal community. No entrance fee, opening hours, contact details or visitor amenities were found in any source, and no coordinates are recorded. The 2010 report states that the only means of transport from Shama to Anlo Beach is by canoe or boat. Nearby Shama offers Fort Sebastian, the Pra River Golf Links and beach resorts, but these are separate places, not Anlo Beach itself.
