Explore Ghana
The Oti Region is Ghana's newest frontier for travellers who like their landscapes big and their welcome personal. Almost everything here is tied to water, rock or forest. The Oti River, also called the Pendjari, runs through the region and is crossed at Dambai by ferry and canoe, while the Dambai Volta ferry carries passengers and vehicles across the Oti River arm of Lake Volta. Inland, the Breast Mountains rise above Odomi, and Kyabobo National Park spreads across the Togo border near Nkwanta with forest-savanna, waterfalls and hiking and mountain-biking trails.
What the places share is a working, lived-in quality. Dambai Ferry Site is a real landing served by vessels on the Dambai–Overbank route, and the Dambai Lake Side Market trades mainly on Mondays and Tuesdays with produce from the river area. Shiare Hanging Village, a roughly 900-year-old Akyode settlement of rock-and-clay terraced houses, sits in the Breast Mountains, and the Akyode Shrine in Nkwanta South is recorded as the Akyode paramount site.
They differ in mood. Some are quiet nature: Chaiso Forest Reserve, Konklobi Island in Biakoye District, Likpe Todome Mountain with its ancestral caves and waterfall side path. Others are social: Lapas Park, Dream Village, and the markets of Dambai and Nkwanta, the latter known for yam trading.
Good to know
Plan around market days and river crossings rather than fixed timetables. Dambai is the region's capital and the natural base for the ferry, the lakefront and the markets; Nkwanta is the gateway for Kyabobo National Park, whose headquarters and entrance sit about 5 km off the Ho–Temale Road, where guided hikes and bike rental are arranged. Getting between places usually means road travel, so allow generous time and check conditions locally before setting out. Before visiting Shiare Hanging Village, the Akyode Shrine or Dream Village, ask locally about access and any community protocols. For ferry and canoe crossings, confirm current services on the day. Carry water, cash and rain protection, and treat every site with respect.
