Nkwanta sits in the Oti Region, close to the Togo border, and it is a good base for travellers who want mountains, forest-savanna country and living culture in the same trip. The places here share a strong sense of place: they belong to this corner of Ghana rather than to a well-worn tourist trail, and they reward visitors who take their time.

They differ in mood and purpose. Kyabobo National Park is the wild, open-air draw, with waterfalls, hiking and mountain-biking trails and community tourism. Kyabobo National Park Headquarters and Entrance is where that visit begins, about 5 km off the Ho–Temale Road, and where guided hikes and bike rental are arranged. The Akyode Shrine, the recorded Akyode paramount site, offers a quieter, cultural stop, while Nkwanta Town Market, the district capital's main market and a major Monday market known for yam trading, shows everyday life at full volume.

Together they make an easy-going day or two: plan your park time, then let the town and its traditions fill the rest.

Good to know

Before you go

Plan around the Monday market if you want to see Nkwanta Town Market at its busiest, and arrange park activities through Kyabobo National Park Headquarters and Entrance, where guided hikes and bike rental are organised. Getting between places is easiest with your own or a hired vehicle, as the headquarters sits about 5 km off the Ho–Temale Road. Before you go, check current access, trail conditions and opening arrangements for the park and the Akyode Shrine, and ask locally about respectful behaviour at the shrine. Carry water, sun protection and sturdy shoes for walking, and allow extra time for the mountain terrain.
