About Likpe Todome Mountain and Tourist Reception Centre
Likpe Todome Mountain rises above the village of Likpe Todome in the Likpe traditional area of Ghana, with the tourist reception centre based in the village itself, between Likpe Bakwa and Likpe Mate. The mountain forms part of the Akuapim–Togo range, close to the Ghana–Togo border, and the climb begins from the village.
The best-known feature here is the Likpe Ancestral Caves, an eco-tourism attraction beneath the mountain. The caves are described as a network of six ancestral caves lying roughly 20 metres below the surface, used as a hideout during the Ashanti war and open to tourists since the 1980s. The Likpe people are Guans who, according to the account published by Graphic Online, migrated from Atebubu in what is now the Bono East Region and lived in the caves for many years. The walk from the village up to the caves is given as between 45 minutes and an hour.
The wider climb is described as physically demanding and calls for walking boots. Halfway up, a side path leads to a waterfall known as Wajakli or Wadjakli falls, and at the top of the mountain a path continues towards Togo. The views from the route are described as spectacular. A basic guesthouse exists at Likpe Todome for visitors who want to stay in the village.
Note that older sources place Likpe Todome in Hohoe Municipal District, Volta Region. Guan District was created on 8 October 2021 from the northern part of Hohoe Municipal District and moved to the Oti Region, so current listings should show Guan District, Oti Region. A tourist information and guide telephone number, 024 066 11 59, appears in the Volta Tourist Highlights PDF; it is an older source and the number has not been confirmed as current.
