About Nkwanta Town Market
Nkwanta Town Market is the main market of Nkwanta, the district capital of Nkwanta South Municipal District in the Oti Region of Ghana. It is a working trading market rather than a visitor attraction in the conventional sense, and the Ministry of Food and Agriculture's district profile records it as a "Major" market held every Monday. The Nkwanta South Municipal Assembly describes the municipality as hosting several weekly markets that draw traders from Ghana and from neighbouring Togo.
The market's importance comes from the district's agricultural economy. Cassava, yam, maize, rice, groundnut and cashew are among the major crops, and MoFA notes that leading produce such as yams, gari and maize attracts middlemen who truck it to urban centres across Ghana and sometimes to neighbouring countries. Nkwanta Market is particularly associated with yam: reporting on the Oti Region's yam trade places it alongside Dambai, Kpassa and Banda as markets where buyers and traders converge during harvest seasons to purchase yam in bulk for distribution to urban centres.
For a visitor, the market offers a straightforward look at how food moves through northern Oti — producers meeting buyers, and agricultural inputs being bought and sold. MoFA describes the district's market network, which also includes Kabiti, Bonakye, Brewaniase, Kue, Pawa, Keri and Kecheibi, as giving producers a place to meet buyers and to purchase farm inputs. The market is also a civic space: in 2025 the Municipal Chief Executive visited Nkwanta Market to engage traders and their leaders.
Practical planning is limited by what is documented. Nkwanta is the district capital, and the district sits in the north-eastern part of the country, bounded by Krachi East to the west, the Republic of Togo to the east, Kadjebi to the south and Nkwanta North to the north. Road is the only mode of transport in the district, and the Assembly notes that untarred road networks can make vehicular mobility difficult in the rainy season. Monday is the recorded market day; daily opening hours are not documented, and no verified coordinates for the market itself were obtained.
