Explore Ghana
Water is the quiet thread running through Ghana's Oti Region, and around Dambai it shapes the day. The Oti River, also known as the Pendjari, is a major international waterway that flows through the region, and at Dambai it meets the great arm of Lake Volta. Here the river is not scenery to be admired from a distance; it is a working road, crossed daily by ferry and canoe.
The three places gathered on this page share that water and that crossing point. The Dambai Volta ferry crossing, run by VLTC, carries passengers and vehicles across the Oti River to the opposite bank. The Lake Volta Boat Ride Experience begins at the Dambai lakefront and ferry point, where an ordinary crossing doubles as a scenic boat and canoe trip. And the Oti River itself is the reason all of it exists.
What differs is how you meet the water. One is a practical crossing, one is a slow look at the lakefront, and one is the long waterway that carries on beyond Dambai. Together they make an easy, unhurried half-day by the river.
Good to know
Dambai is the natural base for all three, so plan your day around the ferry point and lakefront rather than travelling far between stops. Ferries and canoes are working services, not scheduled tours, so allow extra time and be ready to wait. Ask locally about current crossing times and water levels before you set out, as these can change with the season. Carry water, sun protection and small change, and keep a little flexibility in your plans. If you are continuing onward, confirm your route on the day rather than relying on a fixed timetable.
