Why visit

About Dambai Ferry Site

Dambai Ferry Site is the ferry landing and terminal at Dambai, the capital of the Oti Region, on the eastern bank of the Oti River where it meets the Volta Lake system. It is a working crossing point rather than a developed tourist attraction, and the Volta Lake Transport Ltd. (VLTL, formerly VLTC) lists Dambai among its five operational ferry venues, alongside Kete-Krachi, Adawso, Yeji and Agordeke.

The operator's eTicketing page lists two vessels on the Dambai–Overbank route, MV Senchi and MV Buipe Queen, each with a stated crossing duration of 30 minutes. Travel writing describes these crossings as everyday transport carrying vehicles, traders, yam, goats and motorbikes, connecting Dambai and Kete Krachi with the far bank and with Kwadjokrom. For a visitor, the interest lies in that ordinariness: this is a river crossing that functions as part of regional daily life, set within the wider Volta Lake story, in which the lake formed after the Akosombo Dam closed in 1965 and displaced roughly 80,000 people, with Kete Krachi today a resettlement town.

Dambai itself became a regional capital on 12 February 2019 and lies roughly 350 km from Accra and about 60 km from Kete Krachi. A directory listing gives the terminal location as 35GG+27, Dambai, reached by turning off the main road about 2 km before the terminal; the coordinates have not been independently verified.

Practical planning should be cautious. VLTL publishes company-wide hours — office hours Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, and ferry operations Monday to Sunday, 5:30 AM to 6:00 PM — but no individual Dambai crossing times. In July 2025 the Ghana News Agency reported that the River Oti ferry at Dambai resumed operations after a technical fault had left vehicles and passengers stranded in the Krachi East Municipality, with passengers calling for a bridge. Individual crossing times are therefore not reliably fixed, and services are subject to breakdown.
