About Komenda Sea Cave
Komenda Sea Cave, also promoted as Queen Elizabeth Cave, is a natural sea cave on the coast at Komenda in the Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abirem Municipal District of Ghana's Central Region. It sits west of Komenda town, close to the seashore, and is described as one of the natural erosional features cut into sandstone by the sea.
The cave is a somewhat small tunnel, open at both ends, with a floor area of roughly 200 square metres. Its corridor is restricted by rock debris, and a low ceiling limits how much of that floor space can actually be used. At beach level the cave mouth opens to the west and runs northeast, parallel to the shore.
Access is by stairs leading from the Komenda College premises down to the shore. Yural Tours advises visiting with dedicated tour guides to better understand the cave's history.
Local oral history recorded by the African Information Movement holds that the cave formed naturally, that people of Komenda once passed through it toward Elmina, and that Queen Elizabeth lodged there as a hideout during the Second World War; the college buildings are said to have served as a British military camp. These accounts are local tradition rather than documented record, and AIM noted in 2007 that no rehabilitation had been undertaken for tourism.
Visitors should plan around limited, unimproved conditions. No opening hours, fees, facilities, or safety arrangements are established in the available sources, and coordinates for the cave itself have not been confirmed — the recorded coordinates are for Komenda town.
