About Elmina Castle
Elmina Castle, formally St. George's Castle, stands in the town of Elmina in Ghana's Central Region, on a narrow promontory between the Atlantic Ocean and the Benya River. The Ghana Museums and Monuments Board describes it as the first major European construction in tropical Africa, founded by the Portuguese in 1482 and known to them as Sao Jorge da Mina. Its position at the end of the promontory, in the lee of the land, gave it a natural harbour and helped Portugal secure a trade monopoly with access to the region's gold.
The Dutch took the castle from the Portuguese in 1637 and reconstructed it between 1770 and 1775. It served as the focal coordinating point for Dutch activities on the Gold Coast until 6 April 1872, when it was ceded to the British. In later years it housed a Police Recruit Training Centre and a secondary school, and it now operates as a historical museum. UNESCO lists it within the World Heritage property "Forts and Castles, Volta, Greater Accra, Central and Western Regions," inscribed in 1979, which names St. George's d'Elmina Castle among three castles in the property and describes it as one of the oldest European buildings outside Europe.
The castle is a multi-storey historic structure, and the museum provides guided tours. According to the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board, tours cover the former storehouses and slave dungeons, the chapels and governor's chamber, and the cell where a King of Asante was once held prisoner. Exhibits include photographs of the castle across the centuries, displays on the Asantes of Elmina and local trading with Europeans, gold weights, shackles, murals, local textiles, stools, stone implements, ceramics, bottles, clay, glass and beads. The site also has a restaurant and bar, a bookstore and gift shop, a car park, and an open courtyard used for outdoor activities.
Opening hours are 9:00am to 4:30pm daily. Fees reviewed on 1 July 2023 range from GH¢5.00 for Ghanaian lower and upper primary pupils to GH¢80.00 for non-Ghanaian adults, with separate rates for students and volunteers holding ID. An older schedule remains published on the museum page; the 2023 figures are the more recent official listing.
The castle is not wheelchair-accessible. A peer-reviewed study of the Cape Coast and Elmina castles concluded that they are inaccessible to persons with disability, and no official accessibility statement from the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board or UNESCO was located. Step-free access is not confirmed by any source reviewed.
Nearby are a fishing harbour beside the castle and, within walking distance, Fort Coenraadsburg (St. Jago), the Dutch cemetery and the Posuban buildings of Elmina.
