Why visit
About Liati Wote Clean & Green Hub
The Liati Wote Clean & Green Hub, also known as the Nuku Arts Center, is a community-owned, multi-purpose centre in Liati Wote, a rural village and tourism destination in the Afadzato South District of Ghana's Volta Region. It grew out of the Liati Wote Plastic Waste Project, run by the community together with Stepping Stones for Africa and Jolinaiko Eco Tours, and was developed into its present form with funding from the Embassy of France in Ghana through a PISCCA grant, co-funded by Stepping Stones for Africa and the community.
The hub has three parts. The Clean Space is an outdoor area around a bamboo where recovered plastic waste is stored, sorted and washed, together with an indoor creative workshop equipped with machinery, working tables, storage rooms and a veranda, where community members produce goods from plastic waste. The Shop is a showroom and souvenir shop selling products made in the hub alongside other eco-friendly and ethical community products, branded as Nuku Arts. The Green Space is a large open hall with two additional rooms used for exhibitions, awareness activities, training and community meetings.
The buildings themselves are part of the story: they were constructed with interlocking compressed bricks, with walls partly built from plastic bottles, and include water harvesting provisions and an intention to use solar energy. The project has experimented with sewing and ironing plastic water sachets into products and melting bottle tops into artefacts.
For a visitor, the hub is a craft and upcycling centre rather than a conventional attraction: a place to see how recovered plastic is turned into saleable goods and to buy locally made items. It sits in a village known as the home of Mount Afadjato and Tagbo Falls, and the Shop borders the main road between Liati Wote and Gbledi, on the way to Wli. The hub is owned by the community and managed by a board with representatives of community groups plus Stepping Stones for Africa and Jolinaiko Eco Tours. Washrooms, a summer hut and an educational green garden were still planned at the time of the operator's project page, so visitors should not assume they are in place.
