About Bobowasi Island

Bobowasi Island is an uninhabited island in Axim Bay, on the Atlantic Ocean in Ghana's Western Region. It is also spelled Bobwasi, and locally known as "Bebo Arezi" — a rendering of the Nzema phrase "bebo Arezi," meaning "they have beaten Arezi." The island sits roughly 1.8 km from the town of Axim and Axim Castle, north of Watts Rock, east of Egwang Rock and south of Mensell Hedwig Rock, at approximately 04°52′N 02°15′W, about 238 km west of Accra.

Its main built feature is a lighthouse, the Axim Lighthouse: a round stone tower about 12 m high, topped with a lantern and gallery and attached to a single-storey keeper's house. It is described as one of seven lighthouses along Ghana's coastline and the westernmost before Côte d'Ivoire. The light was built around 1915 and is managed by the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority. It was inactive from about 1960 to 2003, then reactivated, and in 2008 it was restored and refurbished with a new solar-powered light and new wiring and controls.

Local tradition gives the island a story as well as a structure. The name is said to derive from the tale of a native named Arezi who was beaten by dwarfs believed to inhabit what was then a thick forest on the island, after he went there out of curiosity.

For visitors, the island is offshore and reached by boat from the Axim area. It is listed among things to do in the Western Region, in the Nzulezo/Axim coastal area. Practical details — boat operators, departure points, timings, fees, landing conditions and whether the lighthouse or keeper's house can be entered — are not established by the available sources and should be confirmed locally before planning a visit.
