Why visit
About Amedzofe Tourism Information Centre / Eco-tourism Center
Amedzofe Tourism Information Centre, also known as the Amedzofe Eco-tourism Center, is the visitor centre for attractions in and around Amedzofe, a mountain village in the Ho West District of Ghana's Volta Region. It sits in the centre of the village, across from the main square and market, and is the practical starting point for planning time in the area.
The centre is described as having a small gift shop and a shaded porch where visitors can sit while a guide helps plan tours. Guided hikes are arranged from here: the steep trail to the top of Mt. Gemi, roughly 1.5 hours at difficulty 3, with 360-degree views toward Lake Volta in clear weather; a descent through farms to Amedzofe falls, about 2 hours, with a steep final section fitted with rope handrails; and a 30-minute village walk to the old German church and its separate bell tower. The 4-metre cross on Mt. Gemi was built by German missionaries in the 1930s.
Waterfall volume peaks from May to November. From January to March the falls may be greatly reduced or absent, which is worth knowing before committing to that walk. The centre also arranges homestay and camping, and has flush toilets and refreshments.
Amedzofe is described as the highest habitable place in Ghana, at more than 600 metres. It lies about 35 km from Ho: drive north to Matse and on to the Dzolokpuita junction, turn right and climb through Vane to Amedzofe. Trotros and buses run infrequently from the Ho lorry station; alternatively take a trotro from Ho towards Hohoe, ask to be dropped at Dzolokpuita, and hike the remaining 8 km.
For enquiries, the centre's listed phone number is +233 24 970 9635, with a WhatsApp contact on 0201131464. Postal correspondence is addressed to P. O. BOX 16, Amedzofe, Volta Region. Opening hours and prices are not confirmed in the available sources, so visitors should call ahead.
