About Ote Lower Falls

Ote Lower Falls is the lower tier of the Ote (Amedzofe) Falls, a multi-tiered waterfall in the Avatime Hills near Amedzofe, in the Ho West District of Ghana's Volta Region. The falls sit towards the eastern section of Amedzofe, roughly 2 km from the town centre, and the lower tier is reached via the community of Gbadzeme. Amedzofe lies north of Ho and south of Hohoe.

The two tiers are distinct in character. The upper falls are reached by a 30–40 minute walk through forest with a short steep descent aided by ropes, and a pool separates the upper and lower falls. The lower falls are described as the more adventurous option, with no clear path. The recommended approach is a 30-minute hike to Gbadzeme village and asking a local guide to lead visitors into the valley. The waterfall is roughly 80 metres tall.

A canopy walkway — reported as the Volta Region's first — opened at the Ote waterfall in November 2022 as an ecotourism project of Herp Conservation Ghana. It comprises two canopy walkways and a descent of 259 steps, though Ghana Business News/GNA reports 290 steps. The site is culturally significant and considered sacred, with local myths and occasional rituals, and the surrounding area is protected as the Onepone Endangered Species Refuge, which covers over 800 acres and is home to the once-thought-extinct onepone frog.

Access is on foot. From Amedzofe town centre the falls are about a 2 km walk of 30–45 minutes with moderate inclines, and the pathway is not suitable for vehicles. At the trailhead there is a descent of 259 steps (Ghana Business News reports 290) to the waterfall and canopy walkway, with ropes on the steep sections. Taxis or motorcycle taxis (okada) can reach the trailhead from Amedzofe.

The Ote Falls site has a reception and tourist information point with trained tour guides, information displays, two canopy walkways and camping facilities; the wider ecotourism project includes rest stops around the conservation area. The Amedzofe visitor centre has flush toilets, refreshments, a small gift shop, and can arrange home stay and camping, with food available from guesthouses or local chop bars. Visit Ghana lists the Amedzofe visitor centre as open 6:00 am to 5:30 pm daily; no separate official hours were found for the lower falls trail, and daylight access is advised.
