About Anyanui Channel Boat Ride

The Anyanui Channel is a distributary of the lower Volta River at Anyanui, in the Anloga District of Ghana's Volta Region. It runs roughly 7 km between Anyanui and Ada Foah, where the Volta meets the sea, and the Volta estuary merges with the Keta Lagoon wetland. The channel is the setting for motorised boat rides that pass through mangrove forest toward the river mouth and estuary.

The route is short and defined: about 7 km each way, taking roughly 45 minutes by outboard motor. Mangroves line the left bank and golden sandy riverbanks the right. Paddled canoes also reach islands in the area, including Dudu, Xevikpodzi, Seva and Anyako, and the adjoining Keta Lagoon wetlands.

The Anyanui tourism centre is the documented base for boat trips across the Volta to Ada Foah, mangrove forest excursions, single or two-person kayak hire, a one-person sailing boat, and visits to a local gin (akpeteshie) distillery. Near Tunu village by Anyanui, Chill River Resort offers a short river ride past local villages to the estuary at Ada, along with mangrove safari, kayak, banana boat, pedalos and a cruise boat.

The setting is conservation-significant. The channel and its surrounding wetlands lie within the Keta Lagoon Complex Ramsar Site, a Wetland of International Importance designated in 1992 and covering approximately 1,200 sq km. The site comprises lagoons, estuaries, mangroves and coastal savanna, and is a vital migratory stopover for bird species.

For access, a ferry connects Anyanui with the other side of the Volta River. Ada Foah is reachable by tro tro from Accra (Tudu Station) and Kasseh, by taxi or car, and by STC bus from Accra. No verified coordinates were obtained for the channel, and no toilets, changing facilities, food outlets or safety equipment at the boat departure point were documented in the sources read, so visitors should confirm current arrangements locally before travelling.
