About Keta Ramsar Centre Sea Turtle Watching

Keta Ramsar Centre Sea Turtle Watching is a community conservation and turtle-watching activity on the Anlo-Keta coast of the Volta Region, in south-eastern Ghana. It is associated with the Keta Ramsar Centre, a non-governmental, not-for-profit organisation that describes itself as youth-oriented and works to protect sea turtles, their eggs and mangroves in the Keta and Anloga area.

The activity sits within the Keta Lagoon Complex Ramsar Site, listed by the Ramsar Sites Information Service at 05°56'21"N 00°50'E. The Forestry Commission describes the site as having a management area of about 1,200 km² and a lagoon area of about 300 km², managed for multiple uses with significant local participation. The same source notes that the site has tourism potential but is yet to be developed to receive tourists — a useful thing to know before planning a visit.

The beach stretch from Fuveme to Anloga is described by conservation sources as one of Ghana's major sea turtle breeding areas. Leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea), green and olive ridley (Lepidochelys olivacea) turtles have been recorded there. Conservation project documentation places the main intervention area in the south-western corner of the Ramsar site, covering the Anloga District communities of Akplortorkor, Agbledomi, Atiteti, Fuveme and Dzita, with the Anyanui estuary as an additional site. Patrols run along roughly 20 km of beach during peak nesting season.

For timing, The Development Institute notes that leatherback turtles are most commonly seen between November and February during night surveys. The project area is given as approximately Lat. 5.775 N, Long. 0.766 E, covering about 1,500 ha of an approximately 4,000 ha coastline from Keta to the Anyanui estuary. These are approximate project-area coordinates rather than a verified visitor entrance, so they should not be treated as a meeting point.

Practical arrangements are not documented in the available sources. Opening times, fees, booking procedures, guiding arrangements, transport and on-site facilities are all unknown, and the activity is described as running along a stretch of coast between Atiteti, Dzita, Anloga and Denu rather than at a single fixed address. Visitors should treat this as an undeveloped conservation area and confirm arrangements directly with the Keta Ramsar Centre before travelling.
