Explore Ghana
The Ashanti Region is where some of Ghana's best-known crafts are still made by hand, and this page gathers five places where you can watch that work happen. Bonwire is the historic Kente-weaving town, about 18 km from Kumasi, and it holds both the Bonwire Kente Museum and the Bonwire Kente Weaving Centre, the visitor hub where tours, weaving demonstrations and village craft shops are based. In Ntonso, roughly 15 km north of Kumasi in Kwabre East, the Ntonso Adinkra Craft Village and Ntonso Adinkra Village are Ghana's best-known centres for hand-printed adinkra cloth, with guided tours of dyeing, stamping and embroidery. In Kumasi itself, the Centre for National Culture, established in 1956, brings Asante craft workshops, a gallery, a crafts shop and the Prempeh II Jubilee Museum together in one government-supported complex.
What they share is cloth, colour and skill passed down through generations, and the chance to meet the people who keep it going. They differ in scale and setting: Bonwire and Ntonso are small-town, community-run craft centres, while the Kumasi centre is a larger cultural institution with a museum under the same roof.
Good to know
Kumasi is the natural base for all five places, and Bonwire and Ntonso sit close to the city, so a single day can cover weaving and adinkra printing if you start early. Ask your hotel or a local driver to help you plan the order of stops, and agree the fare before you set off. These are working craft centres rather than fixed-timetable attractions, so it is worth checking opening times and whether a tour or demonstration is running before you travel, especially on public holidays. Bring cash for craft shops, and remember that many pieces are made to order, so allow time if you want something specific.
