About Ntonso Adinkra Craft Village

Ntonso Adinkra Craft Village is a craft and cultural tourism destination in Ntonso, a town in the Kwabre East District of the Ashanti Region, roughly 15 km north of Kumasi on the Mampong road. The Ghana Tourism Authority's Visit Ghana platform describes Ntonso as the homeland of adinkra cloth, the only place in Ghana where traditional adinkra is made locally from scratch, and still the country's biggest producer of adinkra.

Adinkra cloth is known for its symbols and the proverbial wisdom attached to them. It was originally worn only for funerals in the Ashanti Region and produced mainly in black, brown and red; today it is made in all colours and used throughout Ghana. The symbols are tied to Ashanti philosophy, proverbs, leadership and spirituality, and well-known examples include Gye Nyame, Sankofa, Duafe and Adinkrahene.

The village has a new visitor centre and lays on official guided tours. On a walking tour, visitors can engage with the various stages of adinkra production, including dye preparation, cloth dyeing, adinkra stamping and the embroidery of stamped cloth. A local directory adds that visitors can watch live printing demonstrations, learn the meanings of adinkra symbols, observe traditional dye preparation, buy handmade adinkra fabrics and souvenirs, and interact with local artisans, with guides explaining how natural dyes are produced from tree bark and how stamps are carved and used.

Practical detail is limited. The town's coordinates are recorded as approximately 6°50'N 1°31'W, but these are town-level coordinates rather than a verified visitor-centre entrance, so they should not be treated as a precise arrival point. Opening hours, tour prices, booking arrangements and accessibility are not confirmed by the sources reviewed here, and visitors should confirm these directly before travelling.
