Explore Ghana
Boat trips in the Ashanti Region begin at Lake Bosomtwe, Ghana's only true inland natural lake, set in a million-year-old meteorite crater about 30 km south-east of Kumasi. The water here is calm and enclosed, ringed by hills and forest, and the shoreline communities have long made their living from it. If you want to be out on the water rather than simply looking at it, this is the place to come.
All three places listed here sit at Abono, the main shoreline settlement and entry point to the lake. The Lake Bosomtwe Information Centre is the natural first stop, a community-run base where you can get your bearings before heading down to the water. From the Abono shoreline, Lake Bosomtwe Boat Trips take visitors out on the traditional flat wooden padua, not dugout canoes, which is a distinctive way to see the crater from the inside.
The lake itself is also a wider attraction, with nature, wildlife and forest reserve interest, hiking trails, heritage and cultural sites, and community tourism. So you can pair a boat experience with a walk or a village visit, and let the day unfold at its own pace.
Good to know
Plan your boat trip around the calmest part of the day and allow time at Abono before and after. The lake lies about 30 km south-east of Kumasi, so it works well as a day trip from the city, though staying overnight in a shoreline community lets you enjoy the crater at a gentler pace. Getting between the information centre, the Abono shoreline and the surrounding trails is easiest with your own transport or a local arrangement made in advance. Before you go, check current conditions with the community information centre at Abono, confirm whether boats are running, and ask about local guidance for hiking and village visits. Bring water, sun protection and shoes suitable for uneven ground.
