Explore Ghana
The Ashanti Region holds some of Ghana's most quietly powerful heritage, and its shrines are at the heart of it. Three places on this page share a great deal: all are living cultural sites, all are rooted in Asante tradition, and all reward a slow, respectful visit rather than a quick photograph. Two of them, the Besease Traditional Building and the Ejisu Besease Shrine, also known as the Tano Yaw Shrine, form part of the ten surviving Asante Traditional Buildings within Ghana's 1980 UNESCO World Heritage property. The Ejisu Besease Shrine is the listing's main visitor site, and both sit at Ejisu Besease in the Ashanti Region.
They differ in character. The Besease buildings are architectural heritage you can study up close, while Antoa Nyamaa Shrine in Antoa, Kwabre East, is a river deity reached by a farm path down to the Asuo Nyamaa stream, roughly seven miles from Kumasi. One is about craft and history, the other about water, land and belief. Together they show how Asante spiritual life is bound to place.
Good to know
Plan these as a half-day or full-day outing from Kumasi, which is the natural base for Antoa Nyamaa and the Ejisu Besease sites. Roads and farm paths can be rough, so allow generous time between stops rather than squeezing all three into one rushed morning. Before you go, check current opening arrangements and whether a guide or local contact is needed, as shrine sites are active places of worship and access can change. Dress modestly, ask before taking photographs, and follow any guidance given on site. A local guide will also help you find the path to the Asuo Nyamaa stream.
