Explore Ghana
Lake Bosomtwe is the heart of this page, and the reason to come. It is Ghana's only true inland natural lake, sitting in a million-year-old meteorite crater about 30 km south-east of Kumasi, in the Ashanti Region. All four places listed here share that same water and the same shoreline settlement of Abono, the main entry point to the lake, so a single visit can take in several of them in one day.
They differ in what you do when you arrive. The Lake Bosomtwe Information Centre at Abono is the natural first stop, a community-run place to orient yourself. From the Abono shoreline you can take a boat trip on the lake, gliding out in the traditional flat wooden padua rather than a dugout canoe. If you would rather walk, the Crater Rim Trail is a forested hiking route on the rim above the water, starting near Abono. And the lake itself, a heritage and cultural site as well as a nature and forest reserve, rewards simply being there.
Good to know
Plan around Abono, since it is the main shoreline settlement and entry point, and the other places here are reached from it. Allow a full day if you want the information centre, a boat trip and part of the Crater Rim Trail. The lake lies about 30 km south-east of Kumasi, so Kumasi is the obvious base. Check before you go: confirm boat trips and the information centre are open on your date, and ask locally about trail conditions, since the rim route is forested. Take water, sun protection and sturdy shoes for walking, and carry cash. Community tourism here works best when you book and buy locally.
