About Centre for National Culture, Kumasi

The Centre for National Culture, Kumasi is a government-supported cultural centre in the Ashanti Region of Ghana, established in 1956. It was founded by Alex A. Y. Kyerematen with support from Asantehene Prempeh II and the Asanteman Council to preserve and showcase Asante culture. Originally planned as the Asante Cultural Centre, it was renamed the National Cultural Centre in 1963 and took its present name in 1990. It is described as one of the oldest cultural institutions in Ghana and the first cultural centre established in West Africa.

For visitors, the centre is a place to see Asante craft and performance in one setting. Its craft workshops cover brassworking, woodcarving, pottery making, batik cloth dyeing, kente cloth weaving, beadwork and tie-dye. There is also a gallery and a crafts shop on site, and the centre stages traditional Ashanti drumming, dance and storytelling, along with cultural festivals, exhibitions and lectures.

The grounds are set in Kumasi's Bantama neighbourhood, in the Kumasi Metropolitan Area, and are described as peaceful and shaded. The Prempeh II Jubilee Museum is located at the centre, and the National Museum of Ashanti History is nearby. Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital is also close by, and Kumasi Zoo is roughly 500 metres away.

Practical details are limited. Free street parking is listed, and English and Twi are spoken. Opening hours, admission fees, guided tour arrangements and facilities such as toilets or a cafe are not verified here, so visitors should confirm these directly before travelling. One operator notes that the Culture Centre and Kejetia market are closed on Sundays, but this should be treated as unconfirmed.

The mapped coordinates for the centre are 6°42'02.3"N, 1°37'45.1"W. These mark the feature itself rather than a visitor entrance, so they are best used for orientation rather than for finding a specific gate or ticket point.
