About Kweku Andoh Sustainability Institute
The Kweku Andoh Sustainability Institute (KASI) is a sustainability research, training and community campus in Liati Wote, a farming village in the Afadzato South District of Ghana's Volta Region, at the foothills of Mount Afadjato and near Tagbo Falls. Its operator, HABESHA, Inc. (Helping Africa By Establishing Schools at Home & Abroad), describes it as "a marriage between an eco-resort and a research/training institute," teaching sustainable and renewable eco-holistic practices from an indigenous African perspective. It is named for Ghanaian ethnobotanist Dr. A. Kweku Andoh, and held its grand opening ceremony in Liati Wote on 15 October 2022.
For a visitor, KASI is best understood as a place to learn rather than simply to look at. Learning modules advertised on the operator site include Medicinal Herbs, All About Bamboo, Water Works, Eco-Building, Solar Technology, Plant-Based Cuisine, Organic Agriculture and a Customized Program. Multi-day courses include hikes to Tagbo Falls and climbs of Afadjato. The campus also hosts events such as Dzodzome Fest and the Black Sustainability Summit.
The campus is off-grid and solar-powered, and reported to sit on 5.5 acres. Reported facilities include 5 eco-domes and 4 eco-octagons for housing, a bamboo pavilion used as a multi-use gathering space with a stage and dining room, a bamboo treehouse, a solar car park, indoor and outdoor kitchens, laundry, a seasonal garden and permaculture food forest, a fruit orchard with over 60 tree varieties, a solar dehydrator, the Togbe Kodadza V herbal lab, the Rosa Steverson reception area, the Marimba Ani teaching building with classrooms, a bamboo healing sanctuary with rocket stove and cob oven, a workshop, bio-gas powered outdoor stoves and the Dr. Sebi teaching kitchen. Buildings are named after Pan-African figures. Plant-based meals are offered, and the source states 80% of food eaten at KASI is grown on campus.
Practical planning is course-based. No general admission fee is published; course tuition is published per person in USD equivalents — half-day $70pp; full-day from $160pp with lodging or $100pp without; 3-day from $450pp with lodging; 4-week from $2,000pp — with group discounts available. Lodging is available, and is included in some course packages. Contact: [email protected], +233559215187, kasinstitute.org.
